About the program

The UPMC Rural Family Medicine Residency in north central Pennsylvania began in 2023 as an integrated rural training program. PGY-1 is at UPMC Williamsport (a Level II trauma center), then residents spend PGY-2 and PGY-3 at UPMC Wellsboro or UPMC Cole, both critical access hospitals. The program takes two residents per year (six in the three-year program) and is unopposed at all teaching locations. Housing is provided in PGY-2 and PGY-3, with help with moving costs between PGY-1 and PGY-2, and point-of-care ultrasound is available at all sites. Residents are linked with a community family in PGY-2 and PGY-3 and the curriculum is personalised through electives and areas of concentration.

Program highlights

  • Rural mission fit: lead with why you want a career in underserved rural communities; the program frames its mission around addressing rural health disparities.
  • Ask which site you would train at for PGY-2/3 (Wellsboro or Cole) and how the choice is made, plus what the PGY-1 to PGY-2 transition looks like.
  • Small class of two: emphasise self-direction and ask how the personalised curriculum, electives and areas of concentration are built for each resident.
  • Ask about call and night coverage at critical access hospitals, plus procedure and obstetric exposure in children's, adult and OB care.
  • Mention interest in community engagement: community-family mentoring, outreach programs, health fairs, and partnerships with rural health clinics and community health centers.
  • Ask about the program's early graduating classes and practice outcomes, since it began in 2023.
