About the program
UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh offers a five-year joint Pediatrics-Child Neurology residency with an integrated interview and selection process, five residents per class (five child neurology, or four plus one NDD). Roughly 50% of neurology training is elective, with an 8-week dedicated research rotation in PGY-3 and encouraged international rotations.

Program highlights
- Philosophy of about 50% elective time through the three neurology years; arrive with a clear career direction and say how you would use it.
- Dedicated 8-week PGY-3 research rotation without night or weekend call, with collaboration across UPMC, Pitt and Carnegie Mellon; bring a project idea.
- Division of 30 full-time faculty and 15 fellows with accredited fellowships in EEG/EMG, epilepsy, headache, sleep, stroke and neurocritical care; ask about fellowship placement of graduates.
- Large, busy NICU, PICU and CICU and the only children's hospital in the region, so residents see the full range of primary neurological disease and complications of systemic disease.
- Specialised programs include ketogenic diet, tuberous sclerosis, neurofibromatosis, Fragile X, autism and neurodevelopmental disabilities (one of seven national NDD centers).
- Shared governance: an education committee includes an elected resident, so ask how resident feedback has changed the curriculum; the Global Health pathway offers a four-week rotation abroad.
