About the program

UT Tyler School of Medicine's Family Medicine Residency in Athens, TX (accredited 2020) is an unopposed, community-based rural program that trains in inpatient, critical care, L&D and emergency medicine at UT Health Athens. Obstetrics is described as its greatest strength: one-on-one surgical OB teaching from fellowship-trained family medicine OB physicians and over 700 deliveries a year. Residents complete 13 four-week rotations per year, with electives in Athens including ENT, ophthalmology, urology, hematology, oncology, pulmonary, nephrology, wound care and sleep medicine. About 90% of core rotations are local. Community partners include East Texas Community Clinic and Lakeland Medical Associates.

Program highlights

  • Lead with rural, full-scope family medicine intent: the program's mission and stated aim is to serve rural populations and prepare graduates to practice full scope in any setting.
  • Obstetrics is the stated greatest strength (four faculty are family medicine OB fellowship graduates; 700+ deliveries a year); say if you want operative OB skills and ask about expected cesarean volume.
  • Ask how the small class (six per year, 18 total) translates into mentorship from core faculty and community physicians.
  • Ask about moonlighting for PGY-2/PGY-3 residents who have passed ITEs and hold a full license, and about the 4 elective blocks in PGY-3 plus out-of-town electives.
  • Mention interest in the underserved/FQHC continuity experience at East Texas Community Clinic, and in QI and practice management taught by a 30+ year private-practice physician.
  • Applicants should note the stated criteria: graduated within the last three years; COMLEX accepted; IMGs considered case by case.
