About the program

UIC's three-year EM residency (since 1979 per department; began as a three-hospital group) is now a four-hospital consortium: UI Health, Advocate Illinois Masonic, Advocate Lutheran General and OSF Little Company of Mary, with over 200,000 ED visits per year across sites. Curriculum is thirteen 4-week blocks per year with flexibility to tailor schedules; second-year trauma rotation at Advocate Christ. Protected Thursday conference 7am-12pm. 15 EM residents per year (45 total) plus 3 EM/IM per year. Themes: health equity (a Health Equity fellowship grew out of a residency track), a Global Health Track with trips to Haiti and Uganda, ultrasound month in PGY-1, scholarly project required, simulation at the SAIL Institute. Brown-coat tradition since 1981. Cannot accept H-1B or J-1 visas.

Program highlights

  • Multi-site model is the main selling point (academic, tertiary, community, suburban): explain which patient population you want to serve and ask how site assignments are made each year.
  • Health equity is a cornerstone: residents work in community projects, and a Health Equity fellowship and Social EM track exist. Describe your advocacy/community work and ask about research mentors.
  • Trauma: Level 1 sites (Illinois Masonic, Lutheran General) in PGY-1 with ED airway responsibility; PGY-2 month at Advocate Christ as senior in charge of resuscitations. Ask about procedure numbers.
  • Global Health Track (apply intern year), yearly Haiti and Uganda trips and a PGY-3 international elective scholarship: raise it if global health fits you.
  • Fellowship support: faculty guide toward toxicology, EMS, international health and ultrasound; ask for recent fellowship match results.
  • Logistics to raise: a car is strongly recommended because of suburban sites, the program cannot sponsor H-1B/J-1, and a minimum of one eSLOE and Step 2/Level 2 scores are required.
