About the program

UConn Anesthesiology Residency (merged UConn and Hartford Hospital programs) trains residents across UConn Health, Hartford Hospital, Saint Francis Hospital and Connecticut Children's: over 60,000 anesthetics a year, 4 hospitals, 3 outpatient surgery centers and 3 private practices. Classes of 13 per year; the program states residents are assigned by educational rather than service need. Simulation at Hartford Hospital's CESI center. Four-year categorical track.

Program highlights

  • Education over service: small class (13) relative to 60,000+ annual anesthetics, with cases assigned for training value. Ask how case assignment works day to day.
  • Case variety includes thoracic, neuro, pediatric, pain, cardiac, transplant, level 1 trauma and extensive regional anesthesia; CA-3 is largely elective with up to 3-6 blocks as a Clinical Scientist. Come with a CA-3 plan.
  • Simulation: four days of sim (difficult airway, ACLS, lines, OR emergencies) before entering the OR, then ongoing sessions at CESI, a Laerdal Center of Excellence.
  • Call: no call for the first 3 blocks of CA-1 (buddy system after), then roughly four to six 24-hour calls per four-week block with the post-call day off. Residents can request periodic half-days off for research or appointments.
  • Board prep: monthly oral-board round tables at Hartford Hospital, annual one-on-one orals for CA-3s, and three active ABA oral examiners on faculty.
  • Fellowship pathways in-house: regional (IAA/Hartford), adult cardiothoracic and critical care fellowships. Recent graduate list shows several going to regional anesthesia and cardiothoracic fellowships plus private and academic practice; ask about those pipelines.
