About the program

University of Colorado Internal Medicine Residency (Aurora/Denver) has 173 trainees (73 interns, 49 R2s, 51 R3s, plus 16 Med-Peds residents who rotate with them). Residents train equally at University of Colorado Hospital, Denver Health (safety-net) and the Rocky Mountain Regional VA. A 4+4 block model alternates 4 weeks of inpatient wards with 4 weeks of clinic/elective time with protected scholarship. Tracks: Categorical, Hospitalist, Primary Care, Physician-Scientist and Preliminary; in PGY2 residents choose one of five pathways (Global Health, Health Equity/Policy, Medical Education, Medical Leaders, Research). About half of graduates enter fellowship (about 75% of categorical residents).

Program highlights

  • Know the 4+4 block model: alternating inpatient and outpatient/elective months, with 24 protected Wednesday Education Sessions per year; explain how it fits your learning style.
  • Choose a track and a PGY2 pathway (Global Health, Health Equity/Policy, Medical Education, Medical Leaders, Research): articulate which track and pathway you would pursue and why.
  • Three-hospital system (quaternary university hospital, top-10 safety-net Denver Health, VA): highlight comfort with diverse populations.
  • Strong fellowship placement across all subspecialties, with many matches to Colorado itself (e.g. cardiology, GI, heme/onc, geriatrics); ask about mentorship toward fellowship.
  • Hospitalist and Primary Care tracks with their own curricula; ask about track-specific rotations and leadership.
  • Use point-of-care ultrasound, ECG/CXR, simulation and AMBOSS-based spaced repetition in the curriculum as talking points.
