About the program

The Denver Health/CU Anschutz Residency in Emergency Medicine is a four-year ACGME-accredited program begun in 1974. It combines county, academic and community sites: Denver Health Medical Center (urban Level I trauma and safety-net hospital, ~120,000 ED visits, sole 911 paramedic base for Denver), University of Colorado Hospital, Children's Hospital Colorado and Highlands Ranch Hospital, plus a Winter Park ski-resort clinic rotation. Fourth-year seniors run the Denver Health ED and provide EMS medical control for the Denver Health Paramedic Division. Over 100 faculty and more than a dozen fellowships. Didactics are 5 protected hours every Wednesday on a two-year repeating curriculum.

Program highlights

  • EM4 flagship Senior Resident Rotation: seniors run the Denver Health ED, supervise juniors and students, run the observation unit and give EMS medical control; talk about leadership and flow-management experience.
  • Graduated responsibility by year: EM2 runs the medicine side at Denver Health, EM3 runs the trauma side and ED flow at UCH; ask how autonomy is staged.
  • Four sites in one program (county, academic, pediatric, community); Highlands Ranch is staffed by faculty and residents without APPs, so ask about ownership there.
  • Denver Health is the 911 paramedic base for the city, with an in-house EMS and Disaster fellowship; EMS-minded applicants should ask about EMS rotations and EMS research.
  • Winter Park ski-resort rotation (added by resident request in 2019) and Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center on campus; ask about toxicology and orthopedic experience.
  • Applications scored on experiences, attributes and metrics and every interviewee meets at least three faculty; stress research, leadership and mission alignment. Ask about the research fellowship, ultrasound fellowship and resident research grants.
