About the program

Pierre Rural Family Medicine Residency is a three-year, ACGME-accredited rural program run by the Center for Family Medicine and affiliated with the USD Sanford School of Medicine. It grew out of the Governor's Primary Care Task Force (program established 2012). Year 1 is spent in Sioux Falls at the Center for Family Medicine alongside the Sioux Falls residents; years 2-3 are in Pierre at Avera St. Mary's Hospital and Avera Medical Group Pierre - MAC Lane. It takes two residents per year, with continuity obstetrics, ATLS/ALSO/NRP/PALS/ACLS coverage, required rural rotations and Indian Health Service block rotations.
