About the program

Broadlawns Medical Center (Des Moines, IA) established its Family Medicine Residency in 1971, described as the first in Iowa and one of the first fully accredited family practice programs in the Midwest. It is an unopposed, three-year program at Iowa's largest publicly funded hospital (a county safety-net hospital), affiliated with the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and part of the Des Moines Area Medical Education Consortium with Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Blank Children's Hospital. Over 600 graduates, more than half practicing in Iowa. Residents train with integrated case management, behavioral medicine, a health coach and a pharmacist in clinic and hospital.

Program highlights

  • Safety-net setting: complex, socially and medically challenging patients at Iowa's largest publicly funded hospital. Emphasise comfort with underserved populations and team-based care; ask how resident autonomy is structured as first-line, unopposed trainees.
  • Faculty mentor niche interests: sports medicine, women's health, point-of-care ultrasound, dermatology procedures and family medicine with surgical obstetrics. Name the one you want and ask how protected time and training are arranged.
  • International medicine: residents get high-volume OB experience through a relationship with the OB department at Hospital Escuela in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and residents and faculty travel to provide care abroad. Ask how often and how it is funded.
  • Graduate outcomes: over 600 graduates, more than half practicing in Iowa, many in rural communities; faculty describe graduates ranging from urban clinic to small-town full-scope practice. Ask about rural and OB-inclusive practice placement.
  • Eligibility details to prepare for: USMLE Step 2 passed before graduation required, applicants with three failures on any part not considered, a preference for no more than five years since graduation, and J-1 visas only for foreign graduates.
  • Integrated Medical Plaza houses the Family Medicine and Transitional Year practice, the Family Health Center and psychiatry outpatient clinic; ask about behavioral health integration.
