Program highlights

  • Ask about the rotation mix: roughly 6 months at the VA, 5 at Ben Taub/Jamail and 1 at Texas Children's in PGY-2, shifting toward more VA and Texas Children's time in PGY-3.
  • Surgical exposure starts in year one: weekly VA excision clinic, Mohs clinics Monday and Wednesday, and a Mohs fellowship on site. Emphasise interest in procedural dermatology if that fits you.
  • Pediatric exposure is large: Texas Children's clinic sees about 200 patients a week, with vascular anomalies clinic, pulsed dye laser and patch testing.
  • Dermatopathology is built into the week (Monday unknowns with the fellow, Friday Lever review and slide correlation, plus a selective); a good place to show dermpath curiosity.
  • Didactics are shared with UT Houston and include Thursday Grand Rounds at the VA, Bolognia review, procedural workshops and resident-led basic science talks.
  • Call is from home one week at a time with two attendings (medical/pediatric and surgical); ask how call frequency decreases with seniority. Interviews are in person only, about 40-50 applicants, and program signaling is used.
