Medical Center
Medical CenterThe University of South Alabama Medical Center is a 346-bed acute care facility, which serves as the primary teaching hospital for the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. It is the major referral center for southern Alabama, southern Mississippi, and portions of northwest Florida. The Medical Center offers many facilities, including centers for Level I Trauma, Burn Center, Cancer Center, Cardiovascular Disease, Strokes, Organ Transplantation, and Sickle Cell Disease. Its sophisticated technology, combined with the desire, dedication, and determination of an acclaimed professional staff allows patients to receive the finest medical care available. This facility is the base hospital for categorical residents with all of the ward teams and ER rotations being centered here.
The University of South Alabama Department of Internal Medicine is committed to excellence in patient care, teaching and research.

The medical and nursing staff at the USA Department of Internal Medicine are dedicated to helping members of the community fight disease and problems associated with internal medicine. They have a balanced commitment to the educational interests of the department and the service they provide to  patients. The goal is to provide quality care to  patients through knowledge and training in general internal medicine and its specialties.

The faculty has trained in prestigious institutions all over the world, and brings the results of their research to the community through their clinical practice.

The resident training program is small and friendly, providing an atmosphere where Housestaff and Faculty interact at a level seldom experienced in larger programs.

The fellowship program of various subspecialties, offers participants training for a high level of clinical competence and procedural skillsThe Department of Medicine offers three-year categorical positions, four-year combined Medicine/Pediatrics positions, and one-year preliminary positions. These programs are designed to prepare the resident to enter a primary care practice, academic medicine, fellowship training, or to enter a residency program which requires a preliminary year of training. The training program is small and friendly, providing an atmosphere where housestaff and faculty interact at a level seldom experienced in larger programs.

For the PGY-1 level, there are fourteen positions in the categorical Internal Medicine program, four positions in the Medicine/Pediatrics program and six one-year preliminary positions.* Graduates have the opportunity to do fellowships in Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonary, or Infectious Diseases at our institution.
