The University of South Alabama Medical Center is a 346-bed acute care facility, which serves as the primary teaching hospital for the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. It is the major referral center for southern Alabama, southern Mississippi, and portions of northwest Florida. The Medical Center offers many facilities, including centers for Level I Trauma, Burn Center, Cancer Center, Cardiovascular Disease, Strokes, Organ Transplantation, and Sickle Cell Disease. Its sophisticated technology, combined with the desire, dedication, and determination of an acclaimed professional staff allows patients to receive the finest medical care available. This facility is the base hospital for categorical residents with all of the ward teams and ER rotations being centered here.

The resident training program is small and friendly, providing an atmosphere where Housestaff and Faculty interact at a level seldom experienced in larger programs.
The fellowship program of various subspecialties, offers participants training for a high level of clinical competence and procedural skillsThe Department of Medicine offers three-year categorical positions, four-year combined Medicine/Pediatrics positions, and one-year preliminary positions. These programs are designed to prepare the resident to enter a primary care practice, academic medicine, fellowship training, or to enter a residency program which requires a preliminary year of training. The training program is small and friendly, providing an atmosphere where housestaff and faculty interact at a level seldom experienced in larger programs. |

| For the PGY-1 level, there are fourteen positions in the categorical Internal Medicine program, four positions in the Medicine/Pediatrics program and six one-year preliminary positions.* Graduates have the opportunity to do fellowships in Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonary, or Infectious Diseases at our institution. |

Call Schedule |

Having 4 Ward teams consisting of 1 resident, 2-3 interns, and 3rd and 4th year medical students, our admission call is on a 4 day rotation. Call is split over two days - a short call day (7:00AM - 12:00PM) and a long call day (12:00PM - 9:00PM). The float team consisting of one resident and one intern (responsible for cross-coverage) admits patients until 7:00AM, when the short call team takes over. The ward team intern is scheduled for float approximately every 8th-12th night while on the wards service. |

*At 9:00PM one of the interns (or 4th year med students) on your team (after receiving the day off) comes in to admit patients with the float resident until 7:00AM, at which time the remainder of your team joins you for short call, and the cycle repeats. |

The Department of Medicine has board certified faculty in each of the Subspecialities of Internal Medicine as well as a unique division known as the Division of Medical Education. The Division of Medical Education has four full-time faculty members, one half-time member, and two Chief Residents and affiliated faculty from other divisions. This division is responsible for coordinating the Department’s efforts in the education of residents and medical students. Currently this division staffs 80% of ward attending months, all general medicine continuity clinics and staff's internal medicine consults for USA Medical Center, Children & Women’s, and Knollwood Hospitals. This division also does the large majority of precepting in the Introduction to Clinical Medicine and Physical Diagnosis courses, directs and precepts the third and fourth year Internal Medicine Clerkships and serves as preceptors for Physician Assistant students. The Division of Medical Education fulfills its mission of educating students and house officers.
