regarding program selection(URGENT)

a lot many programs also offer preliminary positions besides categorical positions.. so if i select both of them then will it affect my chances of getting an interview? is it advisable to apply in both preliminary and categorical prog?
plz guide me regarding this..

The interview for categorical IM program can get affected if you choose the same preliminary IM position. If you have any good explanation of why you are planning to choose IM, that might suffice? But the explanation better be good.
