Experience in the US?

Hi! I'm an IMG living ouside the US and I was wondering if you could give me some advice on how to obtain some clinical experience in the States?

From what I've read, every state requires some postgraduate experience in order to issue a licence (which is needed after a successful residency match). Or do they mean that the time spent on residency counts as experience?

Hi Guest33:

An IMG without residency cannot do a complete practice. They do externship or observerships. These clinical experience will provide you with some limited experience in seeing how patients are treated in US by physicians. You will not require any kind of permit or license for this experience. In some cases, you will need to HIPAA or similar certifications. The interested hospital will guide you through the process.

I'm not sure I understood you. I'm new to all this so I would appreciate it very much if you could give me just a little bit more of your time Rolling Eyes

What I don't understand is that postgrad. experience. After having your med school finished and passed all of the USMLE exams (maybe without the Step 3) could you apply for a residency without having any postgrad. exp. IN THE US (like internship, observership etc.) ? If you look at any of the state's medical board page they all (or most of them) ask for it!

And when do the US grads take that internship?

After you complete the USMLE Steps (Step 3 only if you need H1 visa), you apply for residency. The first year of residency is called internship, second year is junior residency, and third year is senior residency. Most programs have specific requirements to be considered for an interview for a residency position. Some programs require you to have some US clinical experience in the form of observership, externship, or clinical rotations in the US while you are in your medical school. So most people try to find some observership or externship by contacting their local hospitals. These do not require any license. What you found was the requirement for obtaining a medical license to practice medicine in the US. For that, you need to complete residency and that includes internship. Hope it is clear to you.
