break in residency for step 3

Is taking a long leave of absence a hindrance to completing residency?..i am having trouble clearing step 3 and my program has suggested that i take leave of absence..upto a year to study and pass the test.. and that they would still have an assured position for me if i pass..is that true or am i being duped? any inputs appreciated

Are you already into residency or matched this year? If its the latter case, then I think they would like you to join next year. If you are already into residency, then its strange because I haven't heard anyone granted one year leave for step 3.

Step 3 and Leave

No, you aren't being "duped." Many residency programs will require their residents to take an Administrative Leave up to a year to complete Step 3. For instance, a program may require that all PGY 2 residents take and pass Step 3 by December of their PGY 2 year. If they don't pass, they are placed on immediate "suspension" but normally they will allow them to return to the program. Especially if you have been performing well in your clinical duties.
