Entering fellowship with USMLE but without residency

Hi there
I have searched in this forum for this particular question. I am a specialist in Endocrinology and Diabetes in the UK, with UK post graduate qualification. I would like to obtain further training in the States through joining a Fellowship programme. I plan to sit the USMLE step 1, 2 and 3. Do I have a chance to join a Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism if I pass the USMLE, without having to do the Residency?

thanks in advance for the reply

Root, I was of the same opinion for quite some time until I learned otherwise.

This is completely up to the fellowship program whether or not to require residency training before accepting one in a fellowship. A possibility of entering fellowship program without training at ACGME-accredited residency first, depends on a combination of:
a. A program willing to get such a fellow
b. State medical board requirements for a restricted license required for a fellowship.

I know first-hand 2 doctors that got into extremelly competitive fields (Ortho and Neurosurgery) by finding a fellowship first and residency afterwards. In both cases programs knew them from other experiences (research in one case and work on a publication in another). Both cases were in NY, if this helps.
