Can a person who originally wanted to specialize in internal medicine initially go in for,say family pactice, and eventually switch to internal medicine in the course of residency??

Answer:
It is possible but it is tough.

If you apply for transfer, there are lot of hurdles, -you need letter from PD which can be a hassle.

Otherwise, you can always apply for a new position. But many PDs who might interview find that you are already ditching out other hospital and rather than not completing 3 years of FM, now moving to IM. If you can convince some of these PDs a good reason, you might have a chance.
