Hello to all of you!
I am an IMG and prepare now for Step 1. Though my dream is to study and practice ayurveda, that is the kind of medicine I believe in.
My questions are, if any of you can help me with some answers:
--is it necessary to take all steps and get the medical licence in order to be able to practice ayurveda or what is need to be done ?
--what ayurvedic universities are in the states?
--are there any clinics specialized in this?
Thank you in anticipation |

| Anything other than allopathy is not recognized as a valid medical diploma from a college listed in IMED and you are not eligible to write the USMLE. |

| If you want to specialize in Ayurveda in the U.S., I don't think there are any Universities here, except some clinics run by NRIs. |

This is an article about some of the institutions teaching Ayurveda. Hope this helps.
Ayurvedic Medicine
Ayurveda is considered to be the wellspring of all natural healing systems. Starting around 1980, Indian Ayurvedic physicians gathered with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to authenticate this precious science according to the original Vedic texts. The result is the *Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health, a system that includes all aspects of this holistic health science with an emphasis on prevention and the full development of the mind and body, as a comprehensive health-care system that relies on a vast and complete range of 20 natural approaches for creating total health by balancing the mind, body, behavior, and environment. Thousands of health professionals around the world have now incorporated this knowledge into their practice. Many of them learned about Ayurvedic medicine from attending the Maharishi University of Management (Maharishi International University, 1971-1995) in Iowa. In order to learn more about the course of studies, click here: *College of Maharishi Vedic Medicine.
In the past ten years, the College of Maharishi Vedic Medicine at the Maharishi University of Management has received $18,000,000.00 in research grant funding. Recently, the U.S. NIH National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine awarded the College an $8,000,000.00 grant to establish the *Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention, which focuses on research, training and demonstration programmes using Maharishi Vedic Medicine in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease and hypertension in minority, high risk populations. In the recent past, the Center has also received two grants involving the use of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) programme in improving the quality of life and longevity of breast cancer patients.
A British author, Chris Morgan, has mounted a website containing a brief text explaining some of the origins of ayurvedic medicine. *Ayurveda, meaning: the science of longevity, was originally a Hindu medical system, but spread to the Buddhists and then to other religious groups in the ancient world. The text available at the site accessible by clicking on the underlined name is excerpted from a book by Morgan, but the site is more immediately informative than commercial.
The *National Institute of Ayurvedic Medicine (NIAM) is the largest resource of information on Ayurveda in the United States. It was established in 1982 by Scott Gerson, M.D. who is the only American medical doctor to hold degrees in both Ayurveda and conventional allopathic medicine. Dr. Gerson's medical practice has combined Ayurveda and conventional medicine for more than fifteen years. The goals of the NIAM include the provision of accurate and authentic information about Ayurveda and research which will help establish the reasons for its efficacy. Click on the name underlined above for access to the web site of the NIAM.
The * Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, NM, hopes to be able to offer a complete program of Ayurvedic study, similar in content to that taught in the traditional Ayurvedic colleges in India. Currently available courses can be perused in the academic catalogue available at their web site. Click on the name underlined above for access to information about the institute.
*Everyday Ayurveda is an organization which promotes Ayurvedic medicine. Their website is graphically simple; it offers information about classes in northern California, information about a printed directory of practitioners (not available on the site), tips on healthy living and book reviews. Click on the name underlined above for access to this site.
*allayurveda.com is a website full of options. You can learn all about Ayruvedic medicine -- its principles, spiritual remedies and how Ayurvedic practitioners diagnose an illness -- or, you can take the practical approach and explore Ayruveda in your daily life, learning your body type and what that means to a practitioner, planning your diet according to Ayurvedic principles, learning to meditate, finding out how astrology works in the Ayurvedic system. There are FAQs, an herbal dictionary, information about where and how to learn more about Ayurvedic medicine; you can shop for herbs and books, chat on Ayurvedic topics, find home remedies and recipes, and you can even explore the subject of improving your sex life according to Ayurvedic principles. Access this site by clicking on the name underlined above.
In Ayurvedic medicine, apparently, gemstones have healing properties. The *Gemstone Therapy site offers access to limited information about how these stones are said to work and to detailled information about how you can purchase gemstones with which to heal. There are links to a few other gemstone therapy sites at the bottom of the page. Click on the underlined name to access this information.
The indiatimes web service offers a page on *Gemstone Therapy which offers details about the use of various stones. The article states quite clearly: Some stones may help alleviate a physical ailment, but more commonly, stones are helpful in dealing with emotional issues. Click on the name underlined above for access to this site.
The *PVA Ayurvedic Multi Speciality Nursing Home is an Ayurvedic treatment and training centre located in Kannur, Kerala, in India. The PVA serves as a hospital providing treatment in all eight branches of Ayurveda. Their website offers access to brief information about Ayurveda, in general, and to further general information about treatments offered. You can contact the PVA Nursing Home by e-mail via the site. For more information, click on the name underlined above.
*Maharishi Ayurveda & Women's Health with Nancy Lonsdorf M.D. is a web site dealing with women's common concerns: menopause, weight loss, fibromyalgia, beauty and skin care, among others. Dr. Lonsdof is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University Medical School and is currently the Director of the mu Ayurveda Health Spa in Fairfield, IA. She is also the author of several books on the use of Ayurveda in women's health. Click on the name underlined above for access to this site.
